Native to Central America, especially Mexico, the agave was considered sacred in pre-Columbian civilizations. It’s leaves, edged with sharp spikes, were used in ritualistic ceremonies while its “pulque”, an alcoholic liquid extracted from agave sap, was believed to facilitate communication with the Gods. In the 16th century, Spanish navigators were intrigued by this juicy “succulent” plant. Applying their technical skills to the distillation of this plant's substance, they created a drink – Tequila, which is one of the most consumed alcoholic beverages in the world now.
