Centella asiatica grows in the tropical, swampy regions of Southeast Asia, Australia and Africa where its slender, creeping stems produce small rounded bunches of flowers. Commonly known as "tiger grass" because large cats like to roll in its leaves to help heal their wounds, it is traditionally used for its soothing and healing benefits. Centella asiatica leaf is commonly used for its beneficial action on the microcirculation and also to help soothe and regenerate the skin. The extract from its leaves and flowers is used for its high content of unsaponifiables which are recognized for their capacity to protect skin from ageing.

Because our commitment to responsible agriculture concerns both plants and the people who grow them, Clarins collaborates with a centella asiatica supply chain in Madagascar. This plant, the source of the asiatocoside we use, is harvested according to Clarins' good practice guide for the harvesting of wild plants. The programme takes concrete action through several initiatives in support responsible development. Our supplier works hand-in-hand with a Madagascan partner to help local communities. Through its intermediary, Clarins has contributed to the construction of nearly 20 classrooms. There are also teacher training programmes and social subsidiaries in place, together with book and food aid programmes in schools, and a project that facilitated the renovation and equipment of a health centre.
