The power of plants

This large yellowy-white, gnarled root from Northeast Asia is known by various poetic names, including “root of heaven”, “promise of eternal life” and “flower of life”, due to its many therapeutic properties. Its story started a very long time ago in China, around 3000 B.C., when the Emperor Chen-Nong, the founder of agriculture and specialist in medicinal plants, chose ginseng as the “heavenly” plant and made a precious elixir from it, reserved solely for the Emperors. Famous for thousands of years for its many benefits, ginseng root is traditionally used as a tonic. Red ginseng, an adaptogenic plant, draws on the natural mechanisms of resistance to strengthen the body against external aggressors (hunger, stress, extreme temperatures, overwork). Used for centuries in traditional medicine, it is renowned for its revitalizing and invigorating properties.

Protecting the soil and biodiversity is a longstanding commitment at Clarins. That’s why we have always given priority to plant-based active ingredients sourced from organic agriculture, grown using sustainable farming methods that respect nature and soil health. For certain plants, such as ginseng, we practice multi-sourcing meaning that we rely on both organic and non-organic extracts in order to ensure the required volume for our products is met.
