Apple tree

The apple tree lives for an average of fifty years. Its deciduous leaves are serrated and oval-shaped and its highly fragrant spring flowers range from bright white to pinkish white. Once fertilised, they turn into a fleshy, seeded fruit: the apple. It is by far the best-known and most widespread fruit species in the world, with around 6,000 varieties worldwide. Apples have always been popular for use in folk medicine. Their rich phytochemical composition gives them a number of properties, including a high hydration capacity, and helps to quench thirst (apples are an athlete's best friend). Recent scientific studies have highlighted its strong antioxidant power, which is thought to be responsible for its preventive action against certain cancers of the digestive system. By also being effective on type 2 diabetes, it helps prevent cardiovascular and coronary heart disease. It is also very useful for resolving intestinal problems, as well as acting as a preventive against cataracts, Alzheimer's disease and asthma.
