The power of plants
Traditionally found on the Greek island of Chios, the mastic shrub grows across the Mediterranean region. It is a robust plant which prospers in infertile, rocky and arid ground. Its roots extend into the soil, covering a wide surface area and allowing it to survive in very dry conditions. It is also resistant to sea spray and saline environments. However, it is extremely sensitive to cold weather and ice. Unlike the pistachio tree which gives us pistachio nuts, the mastic shrub produces a very aromatic resin known as mastic, or gum. Since ancient times, it has been prized for this gum which is used to freshen breath, whiten teeth and treat coughs. The shrub is grown and the mastic produced using manual methods and time-honoured practices, leading to the inclusion of the shrub on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list since 2014.
Skincare Benefits Mastic extract
In cosmetics, mastic extract helps to visibly strengthen fibres (beard, eyelashes, hair) by improving keratin quality.
Responsible sourcing
Our extract is derived from natural mastic resin, grown on Chios, an island in the Aegean Sea, using sustainable farming practices, without pesticides or herbicides. The use of fertilizer is kept to a minimum. Shallow cuts are made to collect the resin and encourage regeneration of the shrubs. A cooperative of more than 5000 producers grow 1.5 million trees, forming the economic, social and cultural backbone of the villages.
