Unlike the pistachio tree which gives us pistachio nuts, the mastic shrub produces a very aromatic resin known as mastic, or gum. Since ancient times, this Mediterranean shrub has been highly valued for its resin, which forms in droplets on the trunk and large branches, is used to sweeten the breath, whiten teeth and treat pulmonary disorders. The gum used by Clarins Laboratories comes from Chios, an island in the Aegean Sea renowned for the high quality resin production.
